Solar Inverters

Solar panels generate DC electricity which must be converted to alternating current (AC) electricity for use in our homes and businesses. This is the primary role of the solar inverter. In a common ‘string’ inverter system, the solar panels are linked together in series, and the DC electricity is brought to the solar inverter which converts the DC power to AC power. In a micro inverter system, each panel has its own micro-inverter attached to the rear side of the panel. The panel still produces DC, but is converted to AC on the roof and is fed straight to the electrical switchboard. Micro inverters also let each panel work independently and are well suited to complex roofs or locations with shading from trees or rooftop obstacles.

There are also more advanced string inverter systems that use small power optimisers attached to the back of each solar panel. Much like micro inverters, power optimisers are able to monitor and control each panel individually and ensure every panel is operating at maximum efficiency under all conditions.

What is a hybrid solar inverter?

Put simply, hybrid inverters are used for battery storage and can also provide limited backup power in the event of a blackout. Hybrid inverters generate power exactly the same way as common string solar inverters but have battery connections and other features built to enable energy storage for later use. This ability to store energy enables most hybrid systems to also operate as a backup power supply during a blackout, similar to a UPS system.
